Peterson, Benning lead HHS Nordic skiers
The Hastings boys and girls Nordic ski teams competed Tuesday at Lake Elmo Park Reserve in a Suburban East Conference race.
The girls were led by Rachel Peterson, who was 17th overall in the 5.5K classic race.
“She laid it all out there,” coach John Dewall said. “She had a great race. She’s looking really good.”
Hannah Peterson was 46th. Vic Zeyen had what Dewall said was “her best race of the year” and she placed 48th.
“It was really exciting to see her move up,” he said.
Allissa Smith was 55th, Abberly Smith was 82nd, Savannah Henderson was 88th and Alexis Edmundson was 92nd.
Henderson and Edmundson are each seventh-graders.
“They’ve made huge improvements so far,” Dewall said. “They’ve really stepped it up as seventh-graders. They’re definitely going to be stars as time goes on.”
Zack Benning was the top boys finisher, taking 13th.
Will Caturia was 24th and Kyle Gudmunson was 54th.
Gudmunson, a sophomore, impressed Dewall with his race. This is his first year on the team.
“It’s amazing,” Dewall said. “He’s got lots of potential. The kid is only going to get better.”
Nick Johnson moved up and took 85th.
Jake Rabaey was 97th, Garrett Tuin was 103rd, Seth Greengo was 107th, Sawyer Karas was 110th and Tate Gahnz was 112th.
Hastings has a race on Monday at Battle Creek. It’s a format similar to the conference meet, which is at Battle Creek on Jan. 28.
There’s a classic race in the morning and a skate race in the afternoon.
