The outdoor skating rinks in Hastings will open for the season Monday, Dec. 13. Weather permitting, the rinks will be closed Feb. 21.

The City of Hastings Parks and Recreation Department will operate and maintain warming houses for three recreational skating rinks and three hockey rinks. The rinks are free for the general public to use during posted days and times. Two additional rinks are flooded and maintained, but they will not have open warming houses.

The participating rinks are Wallin Park, Isabel Park (includes the oval), Wilson Park, Lions Park and Pioneer Park. There is no open warming house at Wilson or Lions Park.

Regular hours for the rinks are as follows: Wallin, Pioneer and Lions parks: 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; noon to 9 p.m., Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

During the Christmas holidays and other city/school holidays, the schedule is as follows at the rinks:

Wallin: noon to 4 p.m., Dec. 24; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Dec. 23, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Jan. 14 and 17; and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Feb. 18 and 21.

Pioneer: noon to 4 p.m., Dec. 24; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Dec. 23, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Jan. 14 and 17; and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Feb. 18 and 21.

Lions: noon to 4 p.m., Dec. 24; noon to 9 p.m., Dec. 23, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31; noon. to 9 p.m., Jan. 14 and 17; and noon. to 9 p.m., Feb. 18 and 21.

All rinks will be closed Christmas Day.

Rink rules include no hockey on recreational rinks; keeping the warming house clean; smoking is not allowed; no horseplay or fighting; no snowball throwing on the rink; staying off the rinks when the crews are cleaning; no profane language is allowed; and no sleds or snowmobiles are allowed on the ice.

The rinks might be closed in very cold weather or in unseasonably warm weather. Call the hotline at 480-2392 for the most current information.
