Outdoor pool opens June 12 in Hastings
The Hastings City Council did just that Monday night when it approved an opening date of Saturday, June 12, for the Hastings Family Aquatic Center.
Aquatic center manager Darbie Johnson had suggested two opening dates in a memo to the City Council. Parks director Barry Bernstein had discussed it with the Natural resource and Recreation Commission and the council's parks and recreation committee. Both supported the later date.
In previous years, the aquatic center has opened for the season the weekend after Memorial Day and then only for three to four hours a day the following week while the students/employees were still in school. In the past two years, attendance on these days has been fewer than 10 to 12, Johnson said.
This year, Hastings and Prescott schools complete their last day of classes Friday, June 11. About 90 percent of the aquatic center employees come from the two schools, she said.
Her two suggestions were to have the aquatic center open the weekend of June 5 and 6, with it being closed the remainder of the week; or have the opening day June 12. The pool will close Aug. 29.
With the earlier opening, Johnson noted the pool would still have to be heated although not in use. With the later start day, the city would save some money by not having to pay staff that week.
More information about the aquatic center opening, fee schedules, classes and season passes will be available soon on the city of Hastings website at www.ci.hastings.mn.us.
