Some locations have only hockey rinks (with boards and nets), some have only recreational rinks, and some have both. Hockey is not allowed on recreational rinks, but if no one is playing hockey on a hockey rink, anyone can skate on it.

New this year is the option to reserve a skating rink for private use for an event or birthday party. The minimum rental is two hours and the rate is $30 per hour. You get exclusive use of the warming house and ice rink during your rental. A birthday package that includes decorations in the warming house and invitations is also available. An attendant would be on duty to make sure your time at the rink runs smoothly. The city also rents out hockey and broomball sets with eight hockey sticks and two pucks, or eight broomball sticks and two broomballs.

Reservations are only allowed outside of the regular open ice hours at Pioneer Park, Lions Park, Wallin Park and the outdoor rink at the Hastings Civic Arena. Reservations are allowed anytime at Lake Isabel and Wilson parks.

Another new feature this year is a skating oval at Lake Isabel Park. The oval is meant for people who want to skate for exercise and go a little faster without worrying about running into people. It runs around the edge of the regular rink and will be separated by a barrier of snow.

One important phone number residents should remember is the Hastings Parks and Recreation Department hotline at 480-2392. The 24-hour hotline is updated daily with information such as which ice rinks are open and when, and any closings due to cold weather.

The times for the following listings of outdoor ice rinks are the times the warming houses are open and the lights are on. Residents are allowed to use the outdoor rinks anytime, not just when the warming houses are open.

There is an outdoor rink at Kennedy Elementary School that's mainly used by the Hastings Hockey Association, but when they're not using it, it's open to the public. The warming house won't be open for the public at any time this winter.
