Ninth-grade wrestlers place second at state

The Hastings Raiders ninth grade wrestling team took second place at the Minnesota Ninth Grade Wrestling League's state tournament Saturday.

The second-place finish was the highest in recent years for the ninth-grade team.

The Raiders had four wrestlers go 4-0 on Saturday. They were Luis Sanchez (105 pounds), Dan Marquette (135 pounds), Jake Anderson (140 pounds) and Andy Rachuy (171 pounds). Luke Rowh (112 pounds) was 3-0, while Jake Spitzack (125 pounds) and Tony Lodermeier (152 pounds) finish the day 3-1.

Vs. Cambridge-Isanti

Following a first-round bye, the Raiders faced Cambridge-Isanti. In the dual, Hastings won 12 of 15 matches on their way to a decisive 61-15 victory. The team recorded eight pins, one major, and three decisions against the Blue Jackets. It was a strong performance against a very good Blue Jacket team.

Vs. Apple Valley

The Raiders' quarter-final opponent was the Apple Valley Eagles. The Eagles jumped out early with the first two wins of the dual, followed by the Raiders countering with two of their own. From there, it was a seesaw affair before Hastings clinched the dual at 171 pound, when the Raiders' Andy Rachuy pinned Jack Garcia in the second period.

Hastings went on to win 36-32.

Vs. Owatonna

With the victory over Apple Valley, the Raiders found themselves in the semi-finals against the Owatonna Huskies. What was expected to be an extremely close and competitive match between the two teams quickly turned into a rout, with Hastings cruising to a 57-6 win.

Hastings won 13 of 15 matches with two pins, three forfeits, one technical fall, one major, and six decisions.

Vs. Foley

The championship match pitted the Hastings Raiders against the Foley Falcons. It was an exciting match from start to finish with the outcome in doubt until the last whistle, when Foley secured a pin to claim the title. Hastings won seven of the 15 matches on their way to a 31-29 defeat. Several matches were extremely close, with Hastings having opportunities to pull them out. The Raiders were 3-5 in matches involving decisions.
