Nick Tusa places 42nd at state golf tournament

Hastings High School sophomore Nick Tusa placed 42nd out of 88 golfers at the 2012 Class AAA state golf tournament at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

Tusa shot an 81 on the first day of play.

He followed that up with a better round of 77 on the second day.

"It was a lot better (on Wednesday)," Tusa said. "I was a lot more relaxed. I was used to it all after the first day, and I was playing with a better group. I was happy. After my first day, I wasn't that happy, but I turned it around the second day and I finally made some birdies."

On Wednesday, Tusa hit 12 greens in regulation and hit 10 fairways. He had 34 putts. His front nine was exceptionally strong - he shot a 37 on the front. He finished with two birdies, the first two he has had at Bunker Hills in quite some time. He said that he went without birdies in the previous three times he played at the course.

Tusa said while it was fun to play at the state tournament, he's really hoping to get the team up to the state meet next year. This year's team came close, and the good news is that none of the top golfers were seniors this year.

"We thought we had a really good chance (of qualifying for the state meet) this year," Tusa said. "Next year, we'll have an extremely good chance. It's not as fun being up there as an individual."
