NewBridge to present Halloween show, 'Sleepy Hollow'
It's the season of scares, and with Halloween right around the corner, many people are getting their fill of all things dark and creepy. But not everyone wants to be frightened. For those who want a bit of tradition without the fright, NewBridge Theatre Company is showing a musical version of "Sleepy Hollow."
The show is the company's first full-length production. It's a musical designed for families and written so that adults can enjoy it just as much as the children do.
"It's not a horror show - it really is for families," said director Elizabeth Tanner.
This particular story is a love story that also has a message of sticking up for one another, Tanner said. The love story centers around Katrina Van Tassel, the richest girl in town. While trying to fulfill her father's plans to do good for the town, she's caught in the affections of Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones.
Stacey Sogard plays Katrina and admitted that "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" scared her as a child. This version is a fun twist, she said.
Driving the action are the Sleepy Hollow Boys, three mischief makers who bring fun and liveliness to the stage.
NewBridge opened in downtown Hastings this past July. While it has done some shows already, this will be its first full production. Lindsey Letendre is looking forward to "Sleepy Hollow" just because it's an opportunity for the company to get to know the community better. Letendre plays Wanda, the curious and well-meaning cousin of Katrina. The theater space is small, making it much easier for the cast to interact with the audience, she said. One of NewBridge's goals is to produce good theater that brings the community together, she said.
The small space also means the audience will get to see all the set changes as well. Following the show will be a talk-back session when the children can ask questions of the cast and crew.
"Sleepy Hollow" will play Oct. 25-28 and Oct. 31. Show times are 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25, 26, 27 and 31 and 2 p.m. Oct. 28. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 15.
After each show, there will be a "Haunted Hastings" event. NewBridge is working with the Dakota County Paranormal Society to get a collection of stories about documented paranormal experiences right here in Hastings. The stories will be read theatrically. Although "Haunted Hastings" is geared more toward adults, it is child appropriate, Tanner said. "Haunted Hastings" begins at 9 p.m. Oct. 25, 26, 27 and 31 and at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 28. The cost to attend is $10. Adults can get into both "Sleepy Hollow" and "Haunted Hastings" for $18.
