New chief should be hired by early October

A timeline has been set for the hiring of a new chief of police in Hastings.

The recruitment process began Tuesday, and applications will be accepted until Aug. 9. The initial group of candidates will be notified by Aug. 19 that they have been chosen for an interview. The first set of interviews will be done the same week and will consist of a three-panel interview that includes the community and other departments.

Finalists are expected to be interviewed Sept. 3, and a new chief would be appointed the first week of October.

Hastings' current chief, Paul Schnell, will finish his work here July 21. While the city works on selecting his replacement, Joe Kegley will serve as interim chief. Kegley served in the same position just prior to Schnell's hiring.
