New bridge to be completed in 2014
Hastings residents finally got the news they've waited years for -- a new bridge is coming!
The current Highway 61 bridge over the Mississippi River in Hastings opened for traffic in the early 1950s. It is now the most heavily-traveled two-lane bridge in the state.
Construction is now under way on a new four-lane bridge.
The best news for travelers is that the current river crossing will be open for traffic even during construction of the new bridge.
Crews began work in the fall of 2010 on the new bridge, which will be located just north of the current span.
The current bridge won't be put out of service until the new one is in place, so visitors and residents won't have to worry about the construction slowing them down on their way into Hastings.
Construction will be completed by June 2014.
The new bridge will be more pedestrian-friendly and will also feature a Mississippi River overlook. It is being built at a cost of approximately $120 million.
