Navigation season ends at Lock and Dam 2
The U.S. Corps of Engineers has released its statistics for the 2009 navigation season, including Lock and Dam 2 at Hastings.
A total of 6,426 vessels and 7,072,327 tons of cargo passed through Lock and Dam 2 from March 23 to Dec.6.
The MV Coral Dawn was the last tow to pass through Dec. 2.
Of the vessels, 716 were commercial, 5,638 were recreational, and 82 were of the "other" category, such as government watercraft.
The numbers reflect an increase in both navigation traffic and tonnage from 2008.
During the 2008 navigation season, 5,496 craft passed through Lock and Dam 2. Of that number, 556 were commercial, 4,880 were recreational and 60 were in the "other" category. In 2008, the amount of commodities transported through the Hastings lock was 4,729,252 tons.
Navigation statistics fluctuate from year to year, depending on the weather, the flows and length of the navigation season. Lock and Dam 2 was constructed in 1930 and reconstructed in 1948.
