Moxy Media Group off and running downtown
So you want to start a new business. You need a logo, a Web site, business cards, shirts printed up with your logo, a computer network set up at your house and vinyl graphics for your car.
If the owners at Moxy Media Group in downtown Hastings get their way, you'll stop at their business to handle it all.
"If you want to start a business, the first place you should stop is here," said Jerome Black, one of the owners.
Black owns the business with his wife, Gitl, and Brandon Blankenship.
Blankenship is a 1999 graduate of Hastings High School. He attended the Arts Institute International in Minneapolis and earned a degree in graphic design and marketing. He earned a job for an agency and got to work doing what he loved.
But in October 2006, an opportunity came available and he jumped at the chance to get back to Hastings. He bought Black Diamond Design and brought his design agency experience with him to help grow the screen printing and embroidery business.
Over the years, he got to know the Blacks, and a year ago, they decided to go into business together. Jerome and Gitl Black bring with them their own business experience, having operated Underground Graphics in Red Wing.
"It fell into place," Blankenship said. "It just felt right."
They decided to open Moxy Media Group in January of this year. The business is located at 112 E. Second St.
Moxy includes the best parts of Black Diamond Design and Underground Graphix, the owners say. That includes screen printing, embroidery, vinyl graphics, design, Web sites and marketing. It's a lot under one roof, but so far it is working for both Blankenship and the Blacks.
"In that year, we've more than doubled what we did last year," Blankenship said. "All the cards have fallen right into place."
Last year, they got big business landed from St. Paul to Wabasha. They earned a contract with the Irish Fair in St. Paul, and they earned all kinds of work with the National Eagle Center in Wabasha.
Blankenship said Black Diamond Design is operated out of the Moxy building, and all the capabilities that he's had in the past still exist.
"Anything you can put your logo on, we can do," he said.
Creating custom Web sites for customers has been a big hit so far, Blankenship said.
"We can do a four or five-page Web site for a few hundred bucks," he said. "And we can show (the customer) how to update it themselves."
