His buddies Caleb Jacobson and Caleb Stanford warmed up to it immediately, but Lucas Peters seemed a bit uncomfortable with the recognition Friday afternoon.

Lucas, a fourth-grade student in Kelly Kelly's room at McAuliffe Elementary School was selected a Super Advocate by the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC). Hastings School District Interim Director of Special Services Laura Bolstad made the presentation of the special robe, certificate and Dairy Queen certificate.

"This is for you, Lucas, for going out of your way," said Bolstad.

The blue and gold cape had "SA" on the back and was given to Lucas to wear for the remainder the day.

His teacher, Kelly, had nominated him for the award.

"Lucas does a wonderful job saying 'Hi' to every child," she said. "He reads books to them and plays with his friends. He is a wonderful super advocate."

"We want to thank you Lucas," said Bolstad. " We all have challenges and we all are different, but we support one another."

McAuliffe Principal Elaine Bell also thanked Lucas.

"I want to thank you, Lucas, for going out of your way to make your friends feel special," she said.

The Super Advocate award was initiated several years ago, Bolstad said, to give recognition to those "who go the extra mile" in reaching out to others. Anyone can nominate another individual, a group or a business. Recipients have included the Hastings Area YMCA and Hastings High School teacher Chuck Farley.

Nomination forms are on the Hastings School District website; www.Hastings.k12.min.us, click on "Special Services."
