Junior Matt Lund defeated three opponents Thursday, May 27, to win the section 1AA subsection singles tennis tournament.

Hastings, Albert Lea, Farmington and Winona took the court at Hastings in the tournament.

Lund started the day with a 6-2 win in both sets against Albert Lea's Brian Reindl. He won 6-2 in two sets again in the second match when he faced Winona's Evan Draves. For first place, Lund faced Cameron Weess of Winona and won 6-4 and 6-1.

"It was a great day of tennis for him," head coach Mick Willette said. "He played as well as he's played all year."

Willette didn't find out who would represent the other teams until the morning before subsections. When the names came out, he found that most of the top singles players switched to doubles for the tournament.

"It's there for the taking," Willette said he told Lund.

All six of Hastings' players advanced to the second of three matches. Also playing singles was junior Chase Kasel. Kasel played a rough first set and lost 6-1, but turned around to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1 to win the match. He lost to Weess in a close second match, 6-4 and 7-6.

In doubles, Brett Peterson and Jake Langeslay defeated a Farmington pair, 6-0 in two sets, but couldn't keep up with Winona seniors Jay Moran and Eric Chapman and lost 6-3 and 6-2. Moran and Chapman won the doubles tournament.

Josh Houska and Ben Carlson made the second doubles team for Hastings after they played singles all season. They beat a Farmington pair 6-1 in two sets, but lost 6-1 and 7-5 to a Winona team.

Finals

Lund played Tuesday morning in the section finals but fell out of the tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to a Rochester Mayo player.

"If he would have gotten through the first round, then he would have had two more matches for sure," Willette said.

Although he couldn't advance further, the experience should help Lund next year.

"He's just a junior, so hopefully, that will prepare him for bigger, better things next year," Willette said.

Looking ahead

With another season ended, Willette is already looking ahead to next year.

"I think we're going to be pretty young overall," Willette said. "Trying to replace those (seniors) is going to be tough."

From the varsity team, Houska, Peterson, Langeslay, Elliot Siebenaler and Mitch Murphy will be graduating. There are other seniors graduating out of the junior varsity team as well.

Jake Albertson got to play a handful of varsity matches and has improved considerably over the season, Willette said.

"He's a kid you always count on to be at practice and give you a full effort," Willette said.

Erik Meyers is another JV senior who just started playing a couple years ago. His attitude and effort is something Willette said a lot of the more experienced players could learn from.
