About 20 years ago, a Hastings woman then named Suzie Mathews (now named Suzie Dillon) needed a massage.

The one she got changed her life.

This week, Dillon opened the new location for Lilypad Day Spa at 103 Sibley Street across from the Levee Café in downtown Hastings. For the past two years, she has operated out of the Elm Salon on Fourth Street.

Way back when, Dillon strode into the Regina Medical Center and got a massage by Sandy (Sommers) Burdine.

"At that point," Dillon said, "I decided I had to go to massage therapy school."

She was amazed at how good she felt during the massage, and how good she felt afterward. So, not long after the massage, she enrolled in massage therapy school. She graduated, then came back to Hastings and has been practicing massage here ever since. Funny thing is, she practices with Burdine, a longtime employee of Dillon's.

Dillon worked for several years at a chiropractic clinic here. She started Lilypad Day Spa on Sibley Street about five years ago, then two years ago decided to move in with the Elm Salon, where she occupied the top floor of the building.

This week, Dillon opened the new location for Lilypad Day Spa at 103 Sibley Street across from the Levee Café in downtown Hastings.

She opted for the change because she was looking to cut expenses.

"I loved being at the Elm Salon," she said. "It was a beautiful building. I was very happy to join forces with such a strong team of women.

"Unfortunately, the economy was not kind to us. In order to survive in this business, the spa industry, we had to downsize. I had to put the Lilypad on a budget."

The new street-level space is the one formerly occupied by the Advanced Eye Care Center.

Inside there are two treatment rooms - one for Dillon and one for Burdine. There's also a room for waxing, manicures, and pedicures.

Dillon continues to stock her line of skin care products, including dermalogica and Sormé.

Hours are: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
