Letter: In support of the levy renewal
To the editor,
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” — Nelson Mandela.
I ask all Hastings residents to show their support and care for our community by voting to renew the 2005 operating levy for our school district. As you have undoubtedly heard, state funding is increasing on a per pupil basis. However, because of the enrollment in our community, school district 200 will not be receiving any additional funds. Therefore, support through the community with this operating levy is vital for our students’ success.
The school district continues their fiscal responsibility through making very difficult choices totaling upwards of $850,000 worth of cuts just this past year. Without the renewal of this levy, what will future years look like?
Our school district has taken steps to optimize busing, consolidate buildings, and prioritize programs. They have demonstrated their commitment to tax payers to not waste any funding and stretch each dollar to its fullest. We need to show our commitment to them by renewing this existing operating levy.
I ask you to support our students, to support our community, to support the future of Hastings public schools and vote Yes on Nov. 5. “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest” — Benjamin Franklin.
