Why should you vote for the school district levy renewal this November?
Levies are a valuable source of funding for schools. That funding has allowed the district to keep class sizes as low as possible and has allowed us to offer a lot of wonderful programs. You might be thinking, “couldn’t the district achieve the same results without a voter approved levy?” That answer is no because we continue to have declining enrollment in the district and it would not be possible to keep our programs and have low class sizes.
This past April, the School Board approved a plan to balance the budget by using some money from its reserve account and by reducing some programs and positions. Voter approved levies are the reason why our elementary class sizes are still in the low twenties. I hope you review the levy information and conclude that a renewal of the levy is a good thing for the future of Hastings.
