Letter: Hastings needs youth facilities
To the editor,
It has come to my attention that in our town of Hastings there isn't much to do for adolescents and young adults. I have been noticing many kids hanging around the parks we have in town and sitting outside of convenience stores on a regular basis.
Clearly these young adults are too old to be playing on the playground equipment, why are they hanging out there? When kids have too much free time on their hands they can get into mischief and cause trouble. We have experienced some of these troubles recently in our home town. I think that it would be a very wise choice and investment to build some sort of entertainment center that would interest young people from the ages of 12 to 18 years old, primarily.
This would give these young adults a place to hang out and spend their time being occupied by doing something else. A few ideas I had in mind were, a Rollerblading arena and arcade, a bowling alley and a laser-tagging arena. It doesn't need to be extravagant by any means -- we just need something to keep these kids busy rather than tromping around our city parks. Hastings has nothing for the young people of this city to entertain themselves with except a movie theater.
If the city of Hastings invested in a place for these young adults to spend their time it would be beneficial to many people; the people of Hastings, the young adults parents and the young adults themselves. This would be keeping them from making bad decisions during their free time, but also keeping the rest of our community a safer, family welcoming place. That is what we want isn't it? A safe, warm and welcoming community?
Sincerely, Shanna Burgmeier
