King's Auto moves south
Hastings Minnesota 745 Spiral Boulevard 55033

If Rick King fixed cars and trucks for just his relatives, he'd probably be able to run a successful business. He has 13 siblings, countless nieces and nephews, and strong family ties all over the county.

King has taken his show on the road and just last month, he opened King's Automotive at a new location. It is now located near the intersection of highways 61 and 316. It's the fourth location for the business.

It all started when he was growing up south of Hastings on a farm. Things needed to be fixed, and he was often helping his brothers get things running again. Before long, he started a repair shop in his garage. That ultimately led to him opening Tech-1 Automotive across the street from what is now Las Margaritas. Eventually, he moved to the industrial park and in September, he opened the new location between Miesville and Red Wing.

"We're close enough to town where we can take care of our regulars, and we're out where there aren't as many other repair shops," King said. "There's just going to be more opportunities out here. We have a lot more room than we had in town."

Family ties are strong in the area. The farm King grew up on is located just a couple miles from the new shop, and his uncle, Sylvester, started King's Place in Miesville, just down the road.

"Coming out here is kind of like going back to the roots," he said.

King has two fellow employees at the shop. His wife, Jenny King, helps out, as does Pete Mies.

"It's on a personal basis," King said. "There's not always someone different behind the counter. Our customers walk through the door, and we know a lot of them by name."

The shop works on foreign and domestic cars and trucks, fixing whatever problems exist, King said.

"We do it all," he said.
