Kidnapping suspect arrested after SWAT team called back to Newport motel
A St. Paul man was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and other charges after a SWAT team helped remove him and his alleged victim early Saturday from a Newport motel that was the site of a police standoff and kidnapping incident last month.
Newport Police Chief Curt Montgomery said in a statement that his department was asked by South St. Paul police Friday evening to help locate a kidnapping suspect and victim. They were found at the Sure Lock Motel, 1280 Hastings Ave.
Police called the Washington County Special Response Team to assist at 1:15 a.m. Saturday. SWAT crews entered a room or residence at 2:52 a.m. and removed the suspect and victim, Montgomery said.
The victim was turned over to South St. Paul police. St. Paul police took Samuel J. McGown, 42, of St. Paul, into custody. McGown was booked into Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of felony domestic assault, domestic assault by strangulation and false imprisonment, a felony.
It was the second time in recent weeks that SWAT team members were called to the Sure Lock Motel. Last month, authorities were sent there on a reported assault. Following an hours-long standoff with the SWAT team, the motel owner, Roger A. Berres, was arrested. Prosecutors charged him with kidnapping for allegedly locking himself in an apartment with an underage girl.
