Let the show begin.

After months of preparation, set construction and rehearsals, Black Dirt Theater Co.’s annual musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” opens at 7 p.m. Friday, July 25, at Hastings High School. The production continues through most of next week.

“It’s going to be great,” said Black Dirt Theater’s Libby Wasylik. “It’s a powerful show. Some parts are hilarious; it is spectacular.

“The audience will witness moments of humanity. For many there will be those feelings of reconnecting with someone, something.”

The show is being presented “in the round,” with some seating on the stage. The audience will definitely feel closer to the action and the characters, Wasylik said.

This is the fifth summer musical from Black Dirt. Previous productions have included “Paul Bunyan,” “Oklahoma,” “The Sound of Music” and “Annie.” All have have been successful.

The selection of “Joseph” was based on several factors, said Wasylik.

“Part is how many people connect with this show,” she said. “There has been the Broadway show, the movie. Many grew up with it, just like with Annie.”

Another factor is number – “how many people can be involved with it,” said Wasylik. For this production, there is a large number in the cast, and many, many more behind the scenes who are doing the set work, the costumes and promotion.

Actual rehearsals began the first week in June, but the decisions actually began early this spring with tryouts and cast selection.

The cast members are a blend of newcomers and those who have been part of past Black Dirt Theater productions, said Wasylik. Auditions help determine how the individuals connects with a part, and how they interconnect with each other.

As usual, the enthusiasm and energy level of this production is close to the level of other plays presented by the community theater group, which has obviously struck a welcome chord here.

“There is great vibrancy,” Wasylik said. “It is a very strong show.”

“Joseph” will be presented at 7 p.m. July 25, July 26, July 29, July 30, July 31 and Aug. 2; and at 2 p.m. July 27 and Aug. 3, at Hastings High School, 200 General Sieben Drive.
