John Sauter, 89

John E. Sauter, age 89, of Cannon Falls, died at his home on Friday afternoon, Jan. 8.

John was born on Nov. 14, 1920, in Garden Grove, Iowa, the son of Earl and Blanche (Cartwright) Sauter. He was raised in rural Iowa and attended country school near Alta, Iowa. In 1944, he went to serve with the U.S. Army in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

John married Ruby Goodvin of rural Kenyon on Sept. 10, 1946.

A longtime, active member of Spring Garden Lutheran Church, John served on the church and cemetery boards, and was president of Brotherhood. He had also served as secretary of the Vasa-Spring Garden Mutual Insurance Company for 29 years.

He loved farming, and was a lifelong farmer in the Spring Garden area. He also enjoyed traveling, sports, and fishing, spending much time at their cabin on Lake Alexander. John loved his family dearly, and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren!

He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Ruby; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Roxanne Sauter of Cannon Falls; daughter and son-in-law, LuAnn and Rich Roiger of Hastings; and four grandchildren, Joshua, Cassandra and Carrie Sauter, all of Cannon Falls, and Jarrod Stoudt of Austin, Texas; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Blanche Sauter; five brothers, Vane, twin Jean, Dean, Robert and Richard; and three sisters, Myrtle Illum, Helen Hanson and Donna Redshaw.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at Spring Garden Lutheran Church, with Pastors Nick and Cindy Fisher-Broin officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Spring Garden Lutheran Church.

Active pallbearers will be Joel Groenke, Thomas Nelson, Walter Smith, Ronald Sauter, Jarrod Stoudt and Joshua Sauter. Honorary pallbearers will be James Nelson, Donald Mattson, Kenneth Shorter and August Banitt.
