According to the Dakota County Sheriff's office, deputies were called just after 2:30 p.m. to the park on the report of shots fired at a duck hunter. It culminated with one hunter shooting a shotgun at the individual placing the decoys in the water.

Both the victim and a witness reported pellets striking the side of the victim's boat. No one was struck by the pellets.

Deputies, Minnesota state troopers and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conservation officers, began a search for the suspect(s). At about 3:45 p.m., the suspect was apprehended on an island near where the original assault was reported. The suspect was positively identified by the victim and witness, and was transported to the Dakota County Jail in Hastings. He was booked on probable cause for assault.
