Caring Reflections: Two Bits

A close shave has always been important to my dad. In fact, as a younger man he would sometimes shave twice a day--once in the morning and again after supper before heading out to an evening meeting. Now shaving is a very long and tiring ritual that he can only manage a few times a week. It's been second nature to him for eons, and he refuses to accept help with it.

...Until this week. When I arrived he had just had a shower and, probably because he knew I was coming, was about to try to shave, too. But, head in hands, he could hardly keep his eyes open, so I offered to do it for him. And, this time, he agreed. His younger self wouldn't have been satisfied with the results, I'm afraid, but the Dad of today seemed to find it relaxing and even pleasurable.

It's always sad to notice another ability ebbing away. And yet for the caregiver there's joy in being able to bring a little comfort and contentment. When I left, he said, "Thanks for the shave. How much do I owe you?"
