HHS takes eighth at Tri-State golf invitational
Two days of golf at the Tri-State Invitational at Edinburgh USA on Friday and Saturday produced two very different results for the Hastings boys golf team.
On Friday, Hastings shot a 317, finishing just three shots out of the lead and in fourth place after the first day.
On Saturday, though, Hastings took a step back and shot 334 to finish eighth out of 24 teams. The tournament includes the top teams from around the state.
“With the wind blowing hard, and water hazards or out of bounds on 16 of the 18 holes, we needed to hit it well off the tee and did not,” coach Pete McGinnis said. “We hit 11 less fairways on day two and that was the difference.”
On the first day, Jacob Cooper led Hastings with a 77, Dominick Bacon shot 79, Mark Huneke shot 80, Matthew Radke shot 81 and Sam Otto shot 82.
“We started on Hole 10 and all five guys broke 40 on the back side, so we were in great shape,” McGinnis said. “Mark Huneke was very impressive while firing a 36 on that side. We found some trouble off the tee and did not putt well on the greens. Some three putts that resulted in some bogeys kept us from the lead.”
On the second day of play, Radke used his short game today to get up and down six times to shoot 38-42 for his 80.
Sam Otto hit nine greens and shot 81, Jacob Cooper shot 84, Mark Huneke shot 89 and Nick Tusa shot 98.
Radke and Cooper both shot a two-day total of 161, 12 shots out of first place.
