For seven class periods at the Hastings High School wrestling room on Friday, Jan. 4, trained volunteers taught freshmen the basics of CPR.

The school was among the first in the state to train freshmen in hands-only CPR. A recently passed bill by the Minnesota legislature requires that "School districts must provide onetime cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automatic external defibrillator instruction as part of their grade 7 to 12 curriculum for all students in that grade beginning in the 2014-2015 school year and later."

The training sessions were taught by Hastings Heart Restart, a community initiative that focuses on education and increasing the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest victims.

"We are so proud to have this terrific opportunity to train students to help save lives," said Paul Dawson, marketing lead of the Hastings Heart Restart steering committee.

Hastings Heart Restart has set a goal of training 10 percent of the population of the city of Hastings in CPR, or about 2,200 people. Since Hastings Heart Start was initiated last summer, 935 people have been trained in CPR.

Hastings Heart Start committee members are Dr. Lawrence Erickson, Juanita Schueler, Chelsea Mayer, Jeffrey Feeder and Melanie Juelfs of Regina Medical Center; Brian LaCroix of Allina Health-EMS; Sgt. Rod Risch of Hastings Police Department; Danna Elling Schultz, Hastings City Council; Dick Reissner and Jim Jacobs, cardiac arrest survivors; Pat McCauley and Patti McCauley, Hastings residents; and Dawson.
