HHS senior Zack Benning wins 11-team meet

Hastings High School senior Zack Benning made a big statement last week, winning the 11-team Ev Berg invitational at Brooktree Golf Course in Owatonna.

Benning finished the 5K course in 15:57.7.

As a team, Hastings settled for a ninth-place finish in the meet with 224 points.

Rosemount won the meet with 62.

Owatonna was second with 65 and Winona was third with 88.

Will Caturia placed 38th for Hastings, finishing the course in 17:50.7.

Kyle Gudmunson took 53rd in 18:23.8.

Nate Holm placed 65th in 18:54.30.

Rounding out the scoring was Finley Myers, who was 67th in 18:56.6.

Also running varsity were Josh Brown (73rd) and Mike Tappella (75th).

Girls

The Hastings girls placed 11th in the meet.

They were led by Michaela Mills, who was 43rd in 16:59.3.

Abberly Smith placed 49th in 17:12.8.

Ciara Christensen was 58th in 17:35.5.

Quinn Myers was 63rd in 17:50.4.

Rachel Peterson took 70th in 18:41.1.

Taylor Engstrom was 71st in 19:03.3.

Cici Carlson took 74th in 19:57.3.

Rosemount won the girls meet. Austin was second and Owatonna was third.

Junior varsity

The Hastings junior varsity boys placed sixth at the meet. Here are the runners:

Nick Johnson, 32nd, 18:48.1; Bobby Verchota, 37th, 19:11.2; Colby Smith, 41st, 19:17.6; Isaiah Gardell, 46th, 19:47.2; Brandon Haraldson, 47th, 19:50.0; Brendan McCabe, 52nd, 19:59.0; David Syverson, 53rd, 20:01.6.
