Hawks take 4th at tournament in Red Wing

The Hastings Hawks traveled to Red Wing this past weekend to play in the annual Dewey Tauer tournament.


In game one, the Hawks took on the Hampton Cardinals, and won 4-1.

Derrick Pfeffer picked up the win, improving to 2-3 on the year. He allowed one run to the Cardinals in the fourth inning. The Hawks scored in the first on a double to left by Pat Kelly, Jordy Horsch later singled, driving in Kelly.

In the fifth, Pat Wadzinski walked, went to third on a single by Pat Kelly and scored on a single by Jordy Horsch.

In the sixth, Andy Salmela singled, Jake Swartout reached on a Cardinal error, and Salmela moved to second. Adam Barta singled, driving in Salmela, and Nick Rost singled to drive in Swartout for the Hawks' final run of the game.

Vs Miesville

In the second game, the Hawks took on the Miesville Mudhens and lost, 8-5.

Adam Barta went seven innings and suffered his first loss of the year.

The Hawks scored first as Pat Kelly tripled (his third of the year) and then scored on the Mudhens.

Miesville scored twice in the first inning on a walk, two base hits and a sacrifice fly. The Mudhens led, 2-1, after one inning.

The Mudhens would add another run in the third on a base hit, a stolen base and another single.

The Hawks scored two runs in the fourth. David Volgelesang singled, then Andy Salmela singled, and then Adam Barta reached on a error, scoring Volgelesang. Salmela scored on a single by Nate Rost.

In the fifth inning, Miesville scored five runs on four hits, a walk and a Hawks error. They led 8-3 after five innings.

The Hawks cut into the lead in the seventh. Jordy Horsch singled, and Volgelesang singled, driving Horsch to third. Horsch scored on a single by Derrick Pfeffer.

In the ninth, the Hawks added one more run on a single by Jordy Horsch.

Vs Cannon Falls

In game three for third place, the Hawks took on the Cannon Falls Bears in a rain-shortened game of seven innings.

The Bears scored in their half of the first inning on two hits and a error. They added two more in the second on a walk, a double and a Hawks error.

The Hawks scored twice in the third on singles by David Volgelesang, Andy Salmela, a walk , a Bear error and another walk, to make the final score 3-2. Nate Rost pitched a good game for the Hawks, but the Hawk bats were cold.

Jordy Horsch had a good tournament with the bat collecting five hits. David Volgelesang, Salmela and Kelly also had five hits.

The Hawks are 7-2 in league play and 10-8 overall. They are in action this Friday in the Green Isle tournament. The play Friday night begins at 8:45 p.m.
