Hawks' losing streak hits three

Since defeating the Hampton Cardinals July 7, the Hastings Hawks have dropped three straight games, dropping to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in league play.

The streak started with the loss to Saint Paul Sport and Spine, 5-2. Then the Hawks lost to the Minneapolis Lakers, 5-2, and on Sunday afternoon at Vets park, in front of a good crowd, the Hawks lost to the rival Miesville Mudhens, 2-0.

The Hawks' pitching and defense have been doing a good job, but the bats have gone cold during the three games.

In the Sport and Spine game, Derrick Pfeffer pitched eight innings, allowing two earned runs. He gave up 10 hits, walked three and struck out seven. Mike Lenertz pitched the ninth, allowing two runs, both unearned. He gave up a hit, walked one and struck out one.

In the Minneapolis Lakers game, Mike Lenertz went 5 and a 1/3, allowing two earned runs, four hits, two walks, and he struck out one. Nick Horsch pitched an inning and 2/3rds. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned. Nick Rost went the final three innings, allowing an unearned run. He had three strike-outs.

Against Miesville, Nate Rost pitched eight very good innings for the Hawks. He allowed only one earned run, struck out seven, walked four and allowed seven hits. Adam Barta pitched the ninth, allowing one earned run, three hits; he struck out two.

In the three games the Hawks hitters were a combined 19 for 98, for a combined average of just over .200. Jordy Horsch was 5-14 over that stretch. Pat Kelly was 5-13. In the three games the Hawks stranded 27 base runners.

Horsch and Kelly lead the team in hitting. Horsch has a .300 average and Kelly has a .356 average.

Pfeffer has pitched 29 innings so far. Barta has thrown 21 innings and Lenertz has pitched 17and 2/3rds.

Barta has three wins and Jared Thies has two.

The Hawks travel to Red Wing Thursday night to face the Hampton Cardinals. Gametime is 6:15 p.m., in the Dewey Tauer tournament.

The CCVL race

Hastings and Red Wing lead the Classic Cannon Valley League standings with identical 6-2 league records.

Miesville is third with a 5-3 mark and Dundas is fourth with a 4-2 record.
