Hastings VFW baseball team makes strong comeback
This week was an interesting one for the Hastings VFW 16U baseball team. The team lost to Ranview at home Thursday night with a score of 13-0, but bounced right back, reclaiming some home field dominance as they defeated Mahtomedi Gold 11-1 on Saturday.
The impressive game by the Hastings Raiders marked the fifth time this season that they were able to notch seven or more runs in one game. Hastings jumped out to a hot start, and they kept it rolling all game. The offensive attack came courtesy of a solid team performance. Cory Anderson had four hits on four at bats, Sam Skoyen, and Stewart Madison both had two hits, and Logan Gove had two RBIs. It was Tyler Sylvester who stole the show at the plate with a staggering four RBIs.
Hastings on the mound was led by the arm of Skoyen as he pitched all six innings, and only gave up one run in the contest. Assistant coach Aaron Stoneberg was impressed with the effort of not only the pitching, but the defense behind the mound as well.
“Sam was efficient all game for us, and he worked fast,” Stoneberg said. The defense played real well that game as well, and we had all three phases of the game were clicking for us.
Adding to the fun of the big Hastings win, the young Raiders team was even granted some burritos for their valiant efforts as the local Chipotle surprised the team by donating a post-game treat.
“It was awesome of them to do that for us,” Stoneberg said. “You can’t go wrong with Chipotle.”
The Raiders will look to continue their momentum this upcoming week as Hastings will be in action again on Thursday as they take on the Highland Park Scots.
