Every year, the Hastings boys swim team shows up at the True Team meet with one of the smallest teams.

This year was no different.

Yet, the Raiders were able to place fourth at the meet, which emphasizes team depth. Depth is something Hastings isn't known for, both when it comes to their pool (it's too shallow for diving competitions) and their numbers (Hastings always has around 20 swimmers on the roster).

At the True Team meet, teams can enter four swimmers per event.

Hastings, though, doesn't have enough bodies to do that, so the Raiders typically had three individuals in each event.

Yet, the Raiders were still competitive and managed to come away with some big wins.

Colby Smith won two events for the Raiders. He won the 200 individual medley in 2:05.79 and he won the 100 butterfly in 54.30.

Thomas Everson won the 500 freestyle in 5:01.59 and he placed second in the 200 freestyle with a four-second time drop.

Tony Ring had lifetime best swims in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Hayden Schmitt, Brandon Underwood, Everson and Smith had a season-best time of 3:26.70.

Schmitt had a lifetime best swim, and Smith's anchor leg split came in at under 50 seconds.

Vs Woodbury

Hastings lost to Woodbury in a Suburban East Conference meet last week, 102-81.

The Raiders were without the services of Underwood, one of their top swimmers, because of the flu.

"You can't afford to lose a guy like that and expect to beat Woodbury," Hastings coach Gerry Rupp said. "He was feeling well enough to come to the meet, but certainly not well enough to swim yet. It was unfortunate, but that's the way it works.

"With him, we probably would have won."

The swimmer of the meet was Elijah Reilly, who had time drops in all four of his swims, Rupp said.

Results from the meet went like this:

200 medley relay - team of Colby Smith, Hunter Sassor, Hayden Schmitt and Thomas Everson, first, 1:47.65; team of John Utecht, Cole Tipler, Elijah Reilly and Kenneth Benson, third, 1:59.53.
