Hastings middle schooler Leah Steding has qualified for the state Geographic Bee and will compete this weekend at St. Cloud State University.

She is one of just 100 students from across the state who has qualified for the competition.

Steding won the meet in Hastings and was one of 400 students across the state to advance. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society. The top 100 from each state advance to the state competition.

The state bee will be held Friday at SCSU.

State winners advance to the national meet in Washington, D.C., from May 19-21.

Steding is an eighth-grader at HMS. She is the daughter of Matt and Mary Steding of Hastings.
