Hastings raced at the sprint relays last week

The Hastings Nordic skiing season began last week with the sprint relays at Troll Hollow.

The meet has a pretty unique format.

Teams are made up of two people. The first member of the team does a one-kilometer sprint, then tags off to a teammate, who then does another 1k sprint. They each do three 1k sprints.

The Hastings boys had a team place ninth. It was made up of Zack Benning and Will Caturia, who finished the 6k race in a combined time of 13 minutes and 58 seconds.

The second team of Forrest Close and Nick Johnson finished in 17:20 and the third team of Jake Rabaey and Sawyer Karas had a time of 19:53.

As a team, the Raiders placed sixth out of seven teams. Forest Lake won the meet. Mounds View was second and Stillwater was third.

The girls had just one team compete. It was made up of Rachel Peterson and Victoria Zeyen and they had a time of 19:27.

Hastings coach John Dewall was just thrilled that the meet was able to be held.

“It’s been great to get some early snow,” Dewall said. “The kids who are new are learning the techniques pretty well. It’s great to get them out.”
