Hastings High student killed in crash Thursday evening, Sept. 6
A 16-year-old Hastings High School student, Madeline Rose Sake, was killed Thursday evening in a two-vehicle crash just south of Hastings. The three people in the second vehicle were transported to Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the Dakota County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on Lewiston Boulevard south of 190th Street. Lewiston Boulevard is a gravel road located in Marshan Township.
Sake was driving a 2003 Kia and was the lone occupant of the vehicle. She was transferred by air ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where she died four hours later.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 1997 Chevrolet club cab pick-up, was driven by Blake Allen Beissel, 18, Hastings. Passengers in the truck have been identified as Derek Vernon Niebur, 18, Hastings, and Mariah Kay Nelson, 17, Hastings.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Sake was northbound on Lewiston Boulevard and Beissel was southbound on Lewiston Boulevard. The crash occurred near a hill crest, which is believed to have contributed to the crash, according to Sheriff Dave Bellows.
The crash remains under investigation by the Dakota County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 651-437-9419.
A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 400 W. Ninth St., and one hour prior to the 2 p.m. service Monday, Sept. 10, at the church.
