Hastings High School sets meetings, first day activities
Most of the retailers, including those here in Hastings, have had their "Back to School" items in stock and on the shelves for a month.
Now, the "think" portion of returning to school is turning to the reality. Hastings High School has sent out letters about the first day of school and upcoming meetings to both students and parents.
Only ninth grade students and students new to Hastings will report to the school Tuesday, Sept. 4. This will be a full day of school -- 7:45 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. -- with the purpose of easing the transition to the high school. Student leaders and community members will help in creating a positive first day of classes.
Ninth-grade students should leave their backpacks and school supplies at home on this first day. Students should bring their schedules and a lunch, lunch money or money in their on-line lunch account.
The Link Crew will be in place to help make this as an enjoyable a day as possible. The Link Crew pairs new students with older students to create a positive connection with the school. The Link Crew leaders will stay in contact with the new students throughout the year.
All students will report to school Wednesday, Sept. 5.
A parents-only orientation will be held Thursday, Aug. 23. This orientation is for parents/guardians of ninth grade and new students and begins at 7 p.m. Information will be presented regarding the first day of school, course offerings, student services and school policies. Small group sessions with administrators and counselors will be part of the evening.
Schedules will be mailed to students in mid-August. Students can come to school to set up their lockers beginning Monday, Aug. 20.
A separate letter explaining the school lunch program will also be mailed to all students this month. A general list of supplies includes notebooks, pens or pencils and three-ring folders. A flash drive of 2GB is recommended and may be used for many classes.
Anyone who needs school supplies for the year can contact Hastings Family Service. The agency is currently collecting donations. Distribution is scheduled for later this month.
Parking fees are $100 per semester and requires a completed agreement signed by the student and parent. Students may purchase parking stickers beginning Monday, Aug. 20, at the attendance desk. A daily parking fee of $3 is available for students who only drive on an occasional basis.
