Hastings, Hampton face off at Vets Park
The Hastings Hawks earned another league win Friday night, this time against the Hampton Cardinals. The game, played at Hastings' Veterans Park, was a home game for the Cardinals.
Hastings lost to Hampton 6-4 earlier in the season, but Friday's game was no repeat performance. The Hawks won, 14-5, after pounding out 16 hits.
Hastings scored early, putting up three runs in the first inning - two on Sam Ryan's third home run of the season - and five in the second. They kept it up for the rest of the game, adding to their score in the third, fourth, sixth and eighth innings.
David Vogelgesang pitched the first three innings, allowing no runs and only one hit. He struck out one and walked one. Tony Kaiser took the mound for the fourth and fifth innings. Kaiser allowed five earned runs and struck out two before Mark Moriarty took over. Moriarty allowed no hits and struck out eight in the last four innings to hold the Cardinals at bay.
Centerfielder David Goggin had a strong night at the plate with four hits off five at-bats, three RBIs and four runs. John Anderson, Sean Dube and Jordy Horsch each had two hits. Anderson scored two runs and had two RBIs.
Hampton's pitchers struggled against the Hawks' batters. Rick Wagner started for the Cardinals, giving up eight runs on eight hits in the first two innings. He walked one and struck out three. Ryan Illa took over for the rest of the game. He walked his first batter and allowed a run before he could get his first out. After seven innings, Illa had allowed six runs on nine hits. He walked six and struck out three.
The Cardinals had their moment in the fifth inning, where they scored all their five runs.
Brandon Boyd started the inning off with a single. Devon LaCoursiere followed with the same, and both he and Boyd scored on another single by Kyle Rains. Jordan Buck hit a single to drive Rains home. A single by Mitch Johnson added the Cardinals' final two runs from Buck and Robinson.
Robinson and Johnson both had two hits each. LaCoursiere, Boyd, Buck, and Rains each had one.
