Hastings grad Lisa Amble assigned to Navy flight school
Amble graduated May 25 with a degree in chemistry. Along with her graduation, she was also commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.
Amble attended Holy Cross with the intent of becoming an officer. Now that she's earned her degree, she's moving on to the Navy flight school - an assignment that many people try to get into but relatively few achieve. Only about 250 people are accepted each year from the NROTC program, with another 250 taken from the Naval Academy.
Amble got the news of her assignment last October after taking the Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB) and indicating a preference for flight school. But once she passed the test, her assignment wasn't guaranteed. She had to go through a set of full medical screenings and even had eye surgery to make sure her vision was perfect. It took her six months to fully recover from surgery, she said.
"If they find fault in anything they can take you out entirely," Amble said.
Amble's goal is to become a helicopter pilot. Specifically, she'd like to fly the SH-60 "Romeo." She got the idea after a summer training session after her freshman year of college, when she got to fly in a helicopter.
"I didn't even have to think about it. I just knew. It was a calling."
Her calling was reinforced last summer when she got to be on board an SH-60 during a missile shoot.
Amble hasn't officially received her orders yet, but it sounds like she'll be heading to the flight school in Pensacola, Fla., later this year, possibly October. Once she starts there, she'll go through a roughly two-year program. First she'll get a basic pilot's license, then move into basic pilot training and then primary, where she'll learn more specific details about being a military pilot. Finally she'll get assigned to train for a specific aircraft.
Once she finishes flight school, Amble will serve eight years as an active duty officer.
Amble welcomes emails from anyone who wants to learn more about her experience with the military so far. She can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
