It wasn't an easy game to play in, but the Hastings Raiders girls soccer team didn't let that stop them. Just 36 hours after learning of the passing of a 16-year-old classmate, members of the girls soccer team took the field in Hastings and beat Apple Valley, 2-1.

"That Friday morning, we got the news of Maddy (Sake's) passing," coach Scott Meier said "That sent shockwaves through a lot of the girls in the program. That was a very tough day for us. There were a lot of heavy hearts. We got together as a program after school. It was about just coming together and being a support network for each other.

"Saturday's game had a lot of emotions. You could see it on the player's faces and you heard it in the pregame speech. It was pretty overwhelming."

Hastings scored early in the match when Haley Jo Kimmen found the back of the net. Emma Kamp scored shortly thereafter and Hastings took a 2-0 lead and went on to win.

Meier said the team changed up its formation for the game, putting Hanna Norman in the center back. That move worked.

"She's got great vision," Meier said. "That was a real positive change for us. The girls really bought into it and had good things to say about it."

Strong efforts were also turned in by Nicole Hollar, the defense, goalie Cortney McDonald and the team as a whole, Meier said.

"Up and down the lineup, everyone contributed in a real positive fashion," Meier said. "We're getting contributions from everybody. If we can continue that against our opponents as we move through our schedule, we're going to be in these games."

Hastings lost to White Bear Lake on Tuesday, 4-0, leaving the Raiders with a solid 3-3 record so far this year.

"I'm extremely proud of the girls," Meier said.
