Hastings beats Winona, then falls to Lakeville North in team tennis tourney

A sweep at all three doubles positions was the key to victory for the Hastings tennis team in the first round of the section tournament.

Hastings beat Winona in the match, 5-2.

The top doubles team of Craig Nielsen and Alex Zuzek won 7-6, 6-2.

The second team of Ben Klimek and Carson Whyle won 6-3, 6-0.

The third team of Rob Troje and Killian Konrady won 6-3, 6-4.

Austin Houska played at first singles for the Raiders and he lost a close one, 6-3, 6-3.

Danny Steiner came through with a big win at second singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Steve Roach earned another big win at third singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Alec Rudh lost a close one at fourth singles, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.

Vs Lakeville North

Hastings lost to Lakeville North in the second round of the section team tournament, 7-0, but the match was much closer than that score indicates.

“Our guys played hard and with focus once they believed in themselves,” Willette said. “It took first sets for some of the boys to believe they could play with these guys.”

Danny Steiner lost at first singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Nielsen lost at second singles, 6-2, 6-2.

Steve Roach fell at third singles, 6-7, 6-4, 10-5.

Alec Rudh lost at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, the top team of Alex Zuzek and Austin Houska lost 6-2, 6-4.

Ben Klimek and Carson Whyle lost at second doubles, 7-5, 6-2.

The third team of Rob Troje and Killian Konrady lost 6-3, 6-4.

Hastings finished the season with an 8-10 overall record.
