Guelle places fifth at state meet
Hastings had two competitors at the state track and field meet Friday at Hamline University in St. Paul.
Dan Guelle, an HHS junior, and senior Kyle Francis each qualified for the state's biggest meet.
And just as he had hoped, Guelle got a chance to run twice at the state meet.
He ran in the preliminary round Friday and finished the 400-meter run in 50.52 seconds.
That time was the seventh-fastest in the event, which meant he qualified for the final round.
Guelle came back for Saturday's finals and shaved nearly a second off his time and ended up placing fifth overall with a time of 49.58.
Troy Pollard of St. Paul Highland Park won the meet with a time of 48.71. Pollard is a senior.
In fact, three of the four runners who finished ahead of Guelle were seniors. The only junior to finish ahead of Guelle was Frank Falzone of Stillwater.
The pole vault
Francis qualified for the state meet in the pole vault.
The HHS senior was not able to clear the opening height after three attempts, and his tournament came to an end.
On his first attempt, he suffered an injury, and that certainly didn't help on his final two attempts.
Shaise Schuette of St. Francis won the event. He cleared 15 feet.
