Girls Track: Raiders improve finish at True Team meet
Last year, Hastings placed sixth out of seven teams at the section True Team meet.
This year, the Raiders placed fifth out of eight teams.
It's the kind of steady improvement Hastings coach Greg Sandkamp is looking for out of his team.
"One of our goals is always to get a little bit better each time you compete," Sandkamp said. "We're looking pretty good, really, with the small bunch of girls we have."
Hastings has just more than 30 athletes out for the team, but the Raiders haven't been using that as an excuse. What the team lacks in quantity they are making up for with quality.
Take, for example, the day HHS senior captain Carlin Bunting had at the True Team meet. She won the long jump and the triple jump for the Raiders.
"She is on top of things this year," Sandkamp said. "She is on fire in the triple jump and the long jump. Her goal is to get to state in both of those events. She's putting up some really good numbers in those events right now, and she's also adding some help for us in some relays."
Alicia Alverson has also been a key member of those relays, Sandkamp said.
Also placing well at True Team were high jumpers Taylor Goergen and Erin Haglund.
Jessica Wagner placed well in the 100 and the 300 hurdles as well.
Distance runners Kelly Pechous and Maddy O'Brien also scored big points for the team, faring well in the 1,600 and the 3,200.
The Raiders finished with 530.5 points at the meet.
Eagan won with 903.5 and Woodbury was second with 730.
Tartan placed third and Park fourth.
Hastings is at Park Thursday for its last regular season meet. The Raiders will compete in the Suburban East Conference meet at Park next week. The prelims will be run Tuesday and the finals Thursday.
