Girls Track: Bunting gets another record
Hastings Minnesota 745 Spiral Boulevard 55033

Carlin Bunting did it.

The Hastings senior wanted a matching pair. Thursday, she got it.

Heading into this season, Bunting already owned the school's triple jump record. She had her eyes set on the 20-year-old long jump record.

Mission accomplished.

Bunting jumped 17 feet, 4 inches at a meet in Cottage Grove and broke the record set by Debbie Groth (17-1 1/2) 20 years ago.

Hastings coach Greg Sandkamp was there for both.

"I've been here a long time, I guess," he said with a laugh. "I saw Debbie do that at the same jumping pit 20 years earlier. Carlin had a phenomenal jump."

Bunting also won the triple jump at Park's meet. She helped the Raiders to a third-place finish in the six-team meet. Woodbury won the meet with 224.5 points. Forest Lake was second with 189.5 and Hastings had 142. Cretin-Derham Hall, Park and Somerset also competed.

"Our kids did a pretty good job," Sandkamp said. "We had some really good performances."

Among those performances was a second-place finish by Alicia Alverson in the 400. She finished with a time of 63.31 seconds.

"We're going to run her in that at the conference meet as well," Sandkamp said.

In the high jump, Hastings had three athletes place in the top five. Taylor Goergen was third, Brittney Huneke was fourth and Erin Haglund was fifth.

In the 1,600, Maddy O'Brien and Kelly Pechous each had personal best times. O'Brien finished second with a time of 5:33.24 and Pechous was fourth in 5:37.36.

Jessica Wagner continues to have a strong season. She placed second in the 300 hurdles (52.01) and third in the 100 hurdles (17.83).

"She has been a very consistent placewinner for us," Sandkamp sad. "She's doing really well."
