Free community meal will be served at United Methodist on Thanksgiving
A free community Thanksgiving meal will be served this year from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, at the United Methodist Church, 615 W. 15th St. The meal is for all interested.
New this year – the Hastings residents who are part of the Meals on Wheels program (coordinated through Hastings Family Service) can have the meal delivered to them Thanksgiving Day. They received the special invitations this week with information about how to make reservations.
The coordinator for the annual event is Karrie Hamilton Williamson.
“We are already doing the cooking and preparation and it’s just a natural fit,” she said.
The meal includes roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, vegetables, and pie. The meals are prepared at the United Methodist Church Thanksgiving morning. Hastings area businesses including The Bierstube and Perkins Family Restaurant have been generous with the donations.
Delivery of meals to others unable to come to the church has been, and will continue to be an important part of the day.
Hamilton Williamson has been part of the dinner since it originated.
“I knew some people who spend the holiday alone – sometimes I did,” she said. “I went to the church and asked if we could try this.”
It has become a tradition for five years now.
Reservations for the meals, both at the church and for delivery, are strongly encouraged and can be done by calling 651-437-4398. The meals are served on a first come, first served basis. Anyone interested in making a donation for the meal can call Hamilton Williamson at 651-253-1256.
