Fr. Gilbert J. Endres, 86

Fr. Gilbert John Endres, age 86, of Hastings, formerly of Hampton, passed away May 24.

Gilbert Endres attended the St. Mathias Parochial School in Hampton, Farmington High School, Nazareth Hall and St. Paul Seminary. He was ordained into the Priesthood on June 7, 1952, at the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul; his first Mass was held at his home parish, St. Mathias in Hampton, Minn. on June 9, 1952.

His first parish was St. Wenceslaus in New Prague. From there he served many parishes including Immaculate Heart of Mary in St. Paul, St. Michael in Stillwater, St. Paul's and St. Mary's in Zumbrota and Belchester, St. Michael's in Farmington, St. Joseph in Waconia, St. James in St. Paul and St. Charles in Bayport, Minn. He retired from full-time pastorship in June of 1996, but remained very active. He moved to Lindstrom, Minn., where he helped with weekday masses at St. Bridget's; later moved to Hampton and assisted part-time at St. Mathias.

He went to Arizona as a winter visitor, but eventually became a full-time resident and served as an assistant pastor at All Saints Catholic Church in Mesa. He returned to Minnesota in February of 2014, and took up residence at the Regina Assisted Living facility in Hastings. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and admitted to Regina Hospital in Hastings on Friday, May 16; he died at United Hospital in St. Paul on Saturday morning, May 24.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Odelia Schiller, Wilfred, Sylvester, Dorothy Schiller and Bernard; and sister-in-law, Anita.

Survived by siblings, Eugene, John (Marian), Don (Joanne), Paul, Jr. (Sharon), David (Sarah), Robert (Diane) and Mary (Tony) Kasel; sisters-in-law, Lorraine and Karleen; also by loving nieces and nephews and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, at St. Mathias Catholic Church, Hampton, Minn. Visitation from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at White Funeral Home, 901 3rd St, Farmington, 651-463-7374, and one hour prior to the Mass at Church on Friday. Interment: St. Mathias Cemetery.
