Jeff Wynne is the coordinator of this year's event. He was here the previous two years, too.

"What Fishing for Life is all about is trying to educate kids about fishing," he said.

There are other aspects about the program as well.

Through different events held on rivers and lakes, the emphasis is on reaching kids, many from the inner-city area, who don't know how to fish or cannot afford it. The group raises funds, as well, to send kids to different camps each summer. This year, 430 kids have the opportunity to participate in those summer programs. About 5,000 rods and reels have been donated to youths.

One such program is the trout pond, which will be set up during Rivertown Days. It is filled with fish and kids can hopefully catch "the big one."

There will be a suggested donation for the fishing, but no one will be turned away, he said.

"Everything that is given to us goes back to support buying rods and reels and providing funds for the summer camps," said Wynne.

Sponsors include VFW Post 1210, ZWK Exteriors LLC, Joe Drexler Agency and Edina Realty. Others are appreciated, said Wynne.

This summer, Fishing for Life is holding 15 lake events, including the one here in Hastings.

Wynne estimated between 400 and 500 kids participated in the Trout Pond last year.
