Felony assault is charged against Hastings man
Hastings police have charged Henry Steven Pope, 42, Hastings, with one count of felony domestic assault by strangulation and two felony counts of domestic assault following an incident reported Nov. 1 at a Hastings residence.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the residence on the report of a woman screaming. When they arrived, they knocked on the door and immediately heard a woman scream for help. The door was locked, but then was opened by a male, identified as Pope. Inside the residence a woman was laying on her back, gasping for breath. She could not speak and emergency services were called. When police attempted to talk to Pope, he became belligerent and was escorted out of the residence, the complaint says.
Eventually the woman was able to provide officers with a statement. She said she and Pope had gone to a bar, began arguing, left and returned to the residence. The arguing began again and turned physical. She said that Pope placed his hands over her mouth and face and she could not breathe. She could not get away, either. It was not until police knocked on the door that Pope released her, according to the complaint.
Pope was transferred to the Dakota County Jail. He denied anything happened, then said the woman had assaulted him.
