Family Video considers store in Hastings

It's a long way from being finalized, but the Hastings could be home to a new video rental store, Family Video.

At the city council meeting last week, the city began discussions on selling a piece of land it owns on Vermillion Street (Highway 61) between the Hastings Walgreen store and Dairy Queen.

The city held a public hearing to consider selling the land, but took no action beyond that.

The city is busy determining if it can, in fact, sell the land to begin with. If it can, the matter will come before the city council again at an upcoming meeting.

Family Video has a purchase agreement to buy one of the homes between Dairy Queen and the lot, and would be working with the second homeowner about acquiring his property, but no deal has been reached there yet.

The property owned by the city is currently a grassy lot where 11th Street used to be.

If the city sells its property to Family Video, and the owners of the video store are able to purchase the other two lots in question, they would need to come to the city with a site plan before they could move ahead.

Family Video has 550 locations across 18 states, including nine locations in Minnesota.
