Erickson qualifies for state
Hastings Minnesota 745 Spiral Boulevard 55033

It took two flawless runs at breakneck speed to qualify for this year's state Alpine ski meet. That's exactly what Dustin Erickson did last Wednesday at Wild Mountain. In the process, he placed 14th and qualified for this week's state meet.

"There was some pretty stiff competition there," coach Jim Peine said. "Dusty just had two good, clean, consistent runs. That got him up there."

Erickson finished his first run in 28.12 seconds and his second in 30.90. He had a combined time of 59.02. The event's winner, Thomas Dylan of St. Thomas Academy, had a time of 54.64.

Peine said that Erickson's pre-race routine of course inspection definitely helped him at the section meet.

"He's very good at inspecting the course and knowing what is coming up," Peine said. "He helps the other kids with that quite a bit."

Adam Peine placed 25th. He had times of 29.16 and 31.80 to finish at 1:00.96.

"I think Adam was a little more conservative on one of his runs, from what I saw," Jim Peine said.

Stephen O'Connor had a time of 1:04.34 and placed 40th.

Michael Stricker had a good first run but struggled on his second. He ended up placing 89th.

Chris Erickson had a rough first run and placed 93rd.

Alyssa Gerlach of Hastings missed qualifying by just one spot. She had times of 33.23 and 31.25 for a total of 1:04.48. Christina Nelson of Mounds View finished one spot ahead of Gerlach at 1:04.41.

"She had two good, consistent runs," Peine said. "The competition was just so tough.

"That was Alyssa's last race for us. It was her goal to make it to state. She just fell one spot short."

Elizabeth Koprucki from East Ridge won the meet with a time of 58.08.

Juliann Moes finished 22nd for Hastings with runs of 33.54 and 31.82 for a total of 1:05.36.

Rosie Pechous was 47th with a combined time of 1:11.21.

Gabrielle Sorg had a rough first run and placed 64th. She had qualified for the state meet last year and was hoping to return this year.

Janna Sorg was 71st in 1:24.80.

Esther Susag finished 91st.

Peine had high hopes for the girls team this year, and was sad for his girls that none were able to qualify.

"If we didn't make the team, we were hoping to get a couple girls to state," he said. "We were close. We weren't disappointed. They all skied well, just not fast enough to make the cut. We're still fairly young."
