Emmerich named Rotary student of the month
In keeping with their goal of promoting "Service Above Self," the Hastings Rotary Club recognized Maddy Emmerich last Thursday as their Student of the Month for March.
She was nominated by Bert Casperson, who teaches art at Hastings High School.
"I would like to nominate Maddelyn Emmerich for Rotary Student of the Month. Maddy is the kind of person that makes everyone around her better. She is generous with her time, hard-working, encouraging to everyone and stands up for what she believes in. When I first had Maddy as a student last year, she quickly stood out as a bright, engaged student with great enthusiasm for life and learning. As the year went on I observed two other traits that I admire in students. The first was that I noticed that Maddy took time to engage, smile and laugh with all types of people in our building; from teachers to principals and all the different types of students that walk our halls Maddy shows every person that she encounters that they matter. The second trait is that Maddy is true to herself. She is not afraid to stand up for something she believes in even if that means facing adversity. She is a vocal participant in class and makes discussions richer for her classmates.
"Last year Maddy wrote and gave the presentation at Empty Bowls. She contacted Hastings Family Service and took the time to go talk to them about their operation and why it is so important. When Maddy gave her presentation it was well informed and her personal conviction came across since she had done the research. I was very appreciative of her taking the time to take this on especially considering she is heavily involved in the choir program and student counsel. In short, Maddy is the kind of student that makes a high school great."
