Editorial: We thank Joe Harris for his years of service
For more than 30 years, Hastings has been served by one county commissioner: Joe Harris.
This week, that career comes to an end for Harris, who decided to not seek re-election this fall.
When Harris began serving Hastings and the rest of District 1, which includes much of southern Dakota County, life here looked a lot different. Hastings, for example, had a population of less than 13,000 people. Our current population sits at about 22,000. Farmington, meanwhile, had just 4,370 residents in 1980. They've now grown to more than 21,000.
Through all that growth, Harris has been a constant. We haven't always agreed with every decision he has made, or with every vote by the rest of the board. That said, we can't imagine being served better by anyone else during those years. He has worked hard, often in the background, to make our county a better place to live. His efforts have paid off, and he deserves a big pat on the back.
Thank you, Joe Harris, for all of your years of service. We appreciate all you have done for Hastings and the county. Good luck to you with your insurance business.
