Say 'Yes' to chickens

To the editor,

It's wonderful to hear that the planning commission is considering allowing Hastings residents to keep a few female chickens on their properties. Consider the following: Poultry has a voracious appetite for just about anything that moves and do an excellent job of controlling all types of pests such as ticks, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, spiders, flies, slugs, snails and even mice and snakes. Eggs produced from chickens that are free range versus factory farm eggs contain a third less cholesterol, a fourth less saturated fat, two-thirds more vitamin A, two times more omega-3 fatty acids, three times more vitamin E, seven times more beta carotene, and three to six times more vitamin D.

My family is looking forward to the day when we can legally keep a few chickens in our backyard and enjoy a healthier and less expensive alternative that we can share with our friends and neighbors.

Please join us in asking the Hastings Planning Commission to vote "yes" to chickens within the city limits.
